Rave - Textual Analysis

Rave - Textual Analysis

-> The header of this magazine reads 'Rave' which is the title of the magazine. The text is in bright blue and in a modern font. This text does not have any effects on it but it stands out against the busy dull coloured background.
-> Above the header there is some text that says 'Where to party this new year's eve'. This text is written in white capital letters with a red backdrop to make it stand out against the background of the page.
-> The only image on this page is Fergie from the Blackeyed Peas. She is posing standing in a cake. Her hands cover part of the header but it is still legible. This gives a more 3D effect to the image.
-> The pattern in the background is a dull dark green and creme background, this makes the page look really busy and also all of the colours that are on it stand out even more.
-> The text that is on the cake that Fergie is jumping out of reads 'The Holiday Issue' rather than having an issue number the magazine has an issue name that fits in with the time of the year which it is being released. This is obviously around December time as there is text on there which says the best ways to celebrate the new year and also it is called 'The Holiday Issue'.
-> The main colours featured on the front of this magazine are red green, white and blue.
-> Fergie's name is written in bold green text at the side of the page. If you didn't immediately know who the person in the background image was then this would make it clearer.
-> Other than on the header, the same font has been used throughout the whole design of the front cover. It has just been used in different colours and sizes. This makes different parts of the page stand out more than others.
-> The barcode is featured in the bottom left hand corner of the front cover.
-> There is only one image featured on this front cover, the rest of the page is made up of different text. However, the page does not look boring and too textual as there is a very busy background design which makes up for the lack of images and emphasises the one of Fergie more as it is the central theme of the page.

Q - Textual Analysis

Q Textual Analysis

-> The header of this magazine is a capital 'Q'. The 'Q' is in bold white text with a slight black backdrop in a red square box. This gives it a 3D effect but also makes it stand out against the vibrance of the colour red. The date, price and website address are written under the letter 'Q' in white text. The issue number is written above the 'Q' in bold black text, this contrasts with the other text around it. There is a black rectangle of text over part of the 'Q'
-> Along the top of the page it reads 'The essential music guide' in bold, white capital letters which are on a red rectangle box running the full width of the page.
-> Next to the header and under the text at the top there is an article about the band Bloc Party and also an image. This text and image is on a white background, this contrasts with the red of the background of the other things around it. The text is black which stands out on the white background making the article stand out more.
-> The main background colour is white. The background image is of the band 'Coldplay' but the photo has been edited and the background has been taken away so the image is just of the people on a white background, this makes them stand out more. Part of the image goes over the header reading 'Q', however the header is still legible.
-> The largest text on the page is that of the main article which reads 'Coldplay' in large yellow font. It is the only font on the page which is in a colour other than white or black, this makes it stands out more, and draws your attention to it on first look. Underneath the word 'Coldplay' there is a few key words which explain what the article in the magazine is about and then there is the name of the person who has written the article. The other font around the word 'Coldplay' is in a white text.
-> There are two other pieces of text down the side of the page underneath the header 'Q' which advertise a couple of other things that are featured in that issue of the magazine.
-> 'On tour with U2', 'U2' is written in bold red font which contrasts with the rest of the black text in the phrase.
-> There is another article underneath which includes a picture.
-> Along the bottom of the page there is a red bar running the full length of the page with a red square at the left side with the letter 'Q' in which is the magazines logo and header. The bar at the bottom is advertising the 'Q news' section of the magazine and what this issue of the magazine is featuring.
-> The barcode is on the right hand side of the page near to the bottom.
-> The main colours of this magazine are red black yellow and white.

Kerrang - Textual Analysis

Kerrang - Textual Analysis

-> This is the front cover of an issue of 'Kerrang' magazine.
-> The header of the magazine reads 'Kerrang' this goes along the top of the magazine cover under a panel of text. The middle section of the word 'Kerrang' is covered up by the person in the main background image. Ho
wever, the name and identity of the magazine is not un-known to the reader as the font and layout of the magazine is recognisable amongst the target audience and they recognise this to be the magazine 'Kerrang'.
-> Most of the font used in this magazine is in white and black text. Which is simplistic yet very effective, these colours link in with the header of the magazine.
-> The main feature of the page is the background image. The image is of Pete Wentz who is the lead singer of the band Fall Out Boy. The main text is in the middle
of the page and reads, 'Fall Out Boy' and underneath that 'Life is sweet!''. The text that describes the main article in the magazine links in with the background image of Pete Wentz eating an ice cream. Ice creams have connotations of being sweet this is portrayed in the image. The line, 'Life is sweet' is written in a different font in yellow text which portrays the sweetness and yellow is a bright colour.
- Underneath the main article there is a list of other bands which are featured in the magazine, they are written in bold white righting which make them stand out against Pete Wentz's orange/red t-shirt.
-> The barcode is featured in the white space between the ice-cream in the image and the edge of the page. This fills a blank white space so therefore the cover doesn't look as though their are any gaps in the layout and design of the page.

-> The articles in the magazine mainly feature the words 'Free' and 'Win' this would appeal to the target audience as they could win and get free stuff from the magazine.
-> There is a section of the page which is a speaker and over that there is a title that says 'High Voltage' with various other text underneath it. The meaning of
the words are potrayed through the image behind them, this technique is also used in the main background image.
-> 'Free Posters' is written on the left hand side of the page over an image of one of the posters that are free.
-> Along the top of the page there is a yellow bar of colour with 'Free CD' written on it and then extra information about the CD.

NME Textual Analysis

NME - Textual Analysis

-> The header reads 'NME' which is the name of the magazine. The font used as the header is the logo of the magazine as it is featured on all of their magazines and also on the website. This font is memorable amongst the target audience as they recognise it to be NME's.
-> The main colours used on this front cover are red, black and yellow. Which are very eye-catching colours and also clash together making the front cover catch the eye of the reader.
-> The most eye-catching part
of the cover is the text, 'The Automatic' which is plastered across the centre of the page. The word 'the' is written in capitals in white, with a red backdrop; this highlights the text and makes it stand out more. The word 'Automatic' is also written in capital letters but is larger and in yellow but also with the same red backdrop. There is a quote from the band above the text. And underneath the text 'The Automatic' their is the name of the article which is going to be featured in the magazine, 'How their monster hit nearly killed them'.
-> The main image on this front cover is of the band 'The Automatic'. This is the main highlight of the page. Part of the image goes over the header, this makes part of the title 'NME' un-readable, this doesn't affect the image of the magazine it is still recognisable to the reader as they will recognise the colour schemes and busy cover. The slogan underneath the header is almost completely covered by the image of 'The Automatic'.
->All of the other images and text on the page stems from the top of the page or the bottom. The only part of the page that isnt attached to the top or the bottom is the main article featured which is in the middle linking with the background image. This highlights the main content more.
-> Along the top of the page next to the header is a red shape with an image in the top right hand corner with two pieces of text to the left and underneath of it. All of the text is white and yellow which stands out against the red background. The image has a white backdrop which helps to emphasise it more. This is again featured along the bottom of the page. There is a red shape with yellow and white text over it and a couple more images that link in with the main stories along the bottom. The main titles of the stories are in yellow whereas the brief summary of the title of the article is in white.
-> The barcode, price and issue number is in the bottom right hand corner of the p
age.
